Text message scam targeting Gwinnett Tech students

SCAM ALERT - Fake account termination message

How to Recognize Unsafe or Scam Text Messages Targeting Your Gwinnett Tech Account

Scammers often try to scare you with urgent claims like:

  • “Your account will be terminated in 24 hours.”
  • “Your Microsoft account is scheduled for deletion.”
  • “Immediate action required.”

Legitimate IT messages never use threats to force quick action.

Never approve an MFA verification you did not request

The Multifactor Authentication on your Gwinnett Tech student account is an added layer of security. Scammers may impersonate someone from the school to try and trick students into approving an MFA verification or revealing an MFA code. Do not fall for it.

🚨 Important Safety Reminder

Gwinnett Technical College will never ask you to provide:

  • Your password
  • Your MFA/verification codes
  • Responses like “YES” or “NO” to confirm account actions

Any message that asks for these is unsafe. Legitimate IT messages never use threats to force quick action.

  • Do NOT share passwords, verification codes, or MFA approvals
  • Do NOT forward the message to others

If a message asks for your password or MFA code, it is almost certainly a scam.

Do not respond to messages like these, we recommend using the spam feature on your phone to block the number.

Not expecting that verification code? Change your password

If you get a verification code you were not expecting, it means someone knows your password and is trying to log into your account. Change your password if this happens, call the student help desk if you need assistance.
