What is phishing?
Phishing emails are deceptive messages that appear to be from legitimate sources, they may try to impersonate Gwinnett Tech or other trusted institutions, to get you to reveal your personal information, login credentials, or financial details. There has been an increase recently in phishing emails targeting Gwinnett Tech students. Scroll down to view some phishing email examples reported to the IT department by Gwinnett Tech students.

This email is a Check Fraud employment scam. It attempts to get students to fill out a google form and reveal sensitive information with the promise of a job.
The subject line on messages of this type will be related to a job offer and may vary. The body of the message has details about a fake job and has a link to a google document. The Google document looks like a job application. It is meant to harvest personal information. If students fill out the form they will get further messages from the scammers attempting to gain access to their bank account.

[ Phishing email ] Avoid Now
10/08/24
This email scam urges recipients to verify an Office 365 account or face imminent termination of the account. The email contains a link to a form where they ask for student's log in details including user ID and password.
The IT department will never send an email asking you for your password.
Microsoft will never send an email asking you for your password.
Scams using documents and form links are becoming more common. The school does not send out emails like this. If you get a message like this, it is fake.
Another way to tell this message is fake is by looking at the sender. Official messages from the school will be from a @gwinnetttech.edu address. If the message is from a strange-looking Gmail account, it is most likely fake.
Similar message may come from a compromised student account @student.gwinnetttech.edu, watch out for that also. Messages sent from compromised student accounts have been reduced by our recent security steps but it does sometimes happen.

[ Phishing email ] Attention: Two Different Logins Detected for Office 365 - Take Action Now

This email was sent from a compromised Gwinnett Tech Student email account. The email claims to be from IT Support. This is a not correct. This email urges recipients to verify an Office 365 account or face imminent termination of the account. The email contains a link to a form where they ask for student's log in details including user ID and password.
The IT department will never send an email asking you for your password.

[ Smishing SMS ] send MFA verification code

Your Gwinnett Tech student account has multifactor authentication enabled in the form of a code sent by text message or through the OKTA verify app. In the screenshot above, the scammer is impersonating someone from the school and asking for a verification code.
Never share your MFA verification code with anyone.
No one from the school will ask you for you MFA verification code. This is a sure sign of a scam. Do not respond to messages like these, we recommend using the spam feature on your phone to block the number.

This is not a phishing message
The subject line of the message will reference your refund amount.
Subject: Your $100.00 from Gwinnett Technical College
Sender: BankMobile=bankmobilewebemail.com@mailman.bankmobilewebemail.com
The body of the message will also reference your refund amount. Your Gwinnett Tech Student email address will be listed near the bottom of the message.
Some students have asked us about these emails from Bank Mobile related to a refund.
These are not phishing messages
Students may receive an email similar to the screenshot above letting them know about a refund. Gwinnett Technical College delivers refunds through BankMobile Disbursements.

There has been an increase recently in phishing emails targeting Gwinnett Tech students. Scammers are out there trying to fool students. Slow down and think carefully about email messages you receive. Look at the details of the message before responding. If you are unsure about a message please ask Student Tech Support, we are here to help.
