Check the Institution page

To download and install Lockdown Browser, click the Institution Page link on the upper left side of the Blackboard page, then click the Respondus Lockdown Browser link.

Only Download from the correct link

In order for LockDown browser to work properly with Gwinnett Tech classes it should only be downloaded and installed from the link on the page above, unless otherwise specified by your instructor.

Please read the Start Here section of the Blackboard page for your course.

Once Lockdown Browser is installed, go to your desktop and open LockDown Browser.

Log in with your Student Email

LockDown browser does not have a separate user ID and password. Log in to Blackboard with your regular student email address and navigate to your test or quiz.

Shut down other applications

Lockdown Browser wants to be the only thing running on your computer while you are using it. This applies to all versions of lockdown browser you may use.

If you see a warning message when you start Lockdown browser asking you to close a program, you must click the Close Process button in order to run LockDown Browser. There is no way around this error.

If you are having trouble getting an application to shut down so you can use lockdown browser, stop by the Tech Support desk on campus and we can help. Remote support sessions are not possible with Lockdown browser as this will be one of the first things it asks you to shut down.

Lockdown browser Help Center

You can use the Help Center link found at the top of the LockDown Browser to be sure it is working properly.

1) Start LockDown Browser, log in to Blackboard and select a course.

2) Select the "Help Center" button from the toolbar in LockDown Browser.

Students can use the Help Center tools to run a diagnostic to be sure it is running properly. Students should run a webcam check and system check before taking a test to be sure the browser is working properly

3) When the System Check is complete, a set of images will appear across the top of the screen. A green mark indicates that the item meets the system requirements; a red X may indicate a problem for that item.

4) Scroll downward to see detailed results of the network and system check, including bandwidth and latency tests, OS information, a list of applications that are running, etc.

5) Select Email results to send the System Check results to your instructor, blackboard support ( blackboardsupport@gwinnetttech.edu ) or anyone else who might need them. You may also wish to email a copy to yourself in case you need to show your lockdown browser is working.

Once lockdown browser is installed and you have run a system check, log into Blackboard and navigate to the test.

Can I use a chrome book or mobile device?
According to Blackboard support, Lockdown Browser does not work with Chrome books.

Blackboard support has also let us know, Lockdown browser does not work on other mobile devices such as tablets, or iPads. (unless specified by your instructor)

Lockdown Browser is not available for mobile phones.

There is another version of lockdown browser for eCampus classes

There is a third version for some Math classes that use Pearson products.

Students will install LockDown Browser from the gwinnetttech.blackboard.com homepage or the link above for most blackboard courses.

eCampus Lockdown Browser-

Students who are taking eCampus course will install LockDown Browser from the eCampus Blackboard homepage.

Pearson Lockdown Browser-

Students who are taking a course that uses Pearson products will use the Pearson Lockdown Browser, usually this will be in a Math class.

Pearson Lockdown Browser opens from a link in the Chrome or Firefox browser students normally use. Just click on the assignment while in Chrome or Firefox and Pearson Lockdown Browser will open automatically once it has been installed.

Students will login to Blackboard as normal using a supported browser ( Firefox or Chrome ), navigate to their course, then to the test. From there you can install Pearson Lockdown Browser by clicking the Download button.

Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the install.

Once the install has completed, click the View a test page link to check that it is working properly.

You will see a message asking if you would like to open LockDown Browser OEM, click the Open LockDown Browser OEM button.

A test page for Pearson Lockdown Browser will then open to ensure LockDown Browser is working properly.

If you see a warning message asking you to close a program, you must click the Close Process button in order to run LockDown Browser.

You will see a message letting you know Pearson Lockdown Browser has installed correctly but do not click OK yet.

First click the help center button at the top and run a system check to be sure it is running properly.

Once you have completed the install, Pearson Lockdown Browser will open from a link in the Chrome or Firefox browser you normally use. Just click on the link for the test or quiz while in Chrome or Firefox and Pearson Lockdown Browser will open automatically.

Use the correct Lockdown Browser

The different versions of lockdown browser are not interchangeable, you must use the correct one for your course or you will not be able to access your course. You may need to install more than one version.

Windows S mode

Students with Windows computers in S-mode will be unable to install Lockdown Browser.

If your Windows computer takes you to the Microsoft store instead of completing an install of Lockdown Browser then you most likely have a machine in S-Mode.

How to Check If You're Using S Mode

You can check whether you're using S Mode by heading to Settings > System > About. On the About page, scroll down to the "Windows Specifications" section.

If you see the words "in S mode" to the right of the Edition entry, you're using an S Mode PC. If you don't, you're not using S Mode.

Lockdown Browser available on campus

Don't miss a deadline because you are having trouble getting lockdown browser to work on your personal device.

Lockdown browser is installed in the library and some other locations on campus for students to use.

The computers on campus have three versions of lockdown browser installed. GTC Lockdown Browser, eCampus Lockdown Browser and Pearson Lockdown browser.

To use the GTC lockdown browser for Gwinnett Tech Blackboard courses or the version eCampus lockdown browser for eCampus courses, choose the shortcut that says Lockdown Browser 2 Lab.

Once you click the Lockdown Browser 2 lab shortcut, you will see a dropdown menu.

Choose Blackboard - eCampus for eCampus lockdown browser for use with eCampus courses

or choose Blackboard - TCSG for GTC lockdown browser for use with Gwinnett Tech Blackboard courses.

There is a second shortcut for the OEM lockdown browser, this is for the Pearson lockdown browser. This shortcut is not used as the Pearson lockdown browser starts from the blackboard link in courses that use that version.

Lockdown Browser Help from Respondus

For some issues with Lockdown browser you may need to submit a help request directly to Respondus.

  • Respondus has a Knowledge Base available from support.respondus.com.
    Select the " Knowledge Base" link and then select "Respondus LockDown Browser" as the product.
    If your problem is with a webcam, select " Respondus Monitor" as your product
  • If you're still unable to resolve a technical issue with LockDown Browser, go to support.respondus.com and select Submit a Ticket. Provide detailed information about your problem and what steps you took to resolve it.

Pearson Lockdown browser Fix for Mac OS 14

There is an ongoing known issue right now with Pearson Lockdown browser not working on Mac OS 14 Sonoma.

Mac OS 14 is not yet an officially supported operating system for LockDown Browser. Respondus support discovered a bug that causes a crash with Lockdown browser. The bug has been reported to Apple.

Respondus support created a fix that helps avoid the crash. The fix is included in version 2.1.1.03 and newer of the OEM browser used by Pearson. Students will want to obtain this installer and run it to perform the install on their Macs if they are using OS 14 Sonoma.
Since Pearson hasn't yet made that version available on their website, students can download it from here:
